Home Reviews C.S.S.M.E. Jazmine Sullivan - Need U Bad

Another great soul has passed away. It's been reported that legendary musician was found dead at his home in Memphis today. The composer most known for the theme from Shaft and as the voice of Chef on Comedy Central's animated show South Park is no stranger to hip-hop: his work has been sampled many times over the years. My thoughts go to the Hayes' family in this time of grief.

Jazmine Sullivan Jazmine Sullivan - Need U Bad
Produced by Lamb & Missy Elliott

If you were to succumb to hype, let it be Jazmine Sullivan. She has a compelling story. She’s been singing and performing since sandbox years. She cut her teeth through appearances at reputed showcases. She has been blessed with good looks. And she has the star-power (and the complementary resources) to back her push for a broader audience. But beyond all that, she actually has talent.

When the reaggae melody starts and the vocals kick in, thoughts of Miseducation-era Lauryn Hill will rush in. But this is no Ex-Factor alternate take. It doesn’t take much time to notice that Jaz has a more powerful delivery than our beloved L Boogie. The song begets more comparisons that can just as quickly be dismissed. Syleena Johnson? She’s more malleable. Mary J. Blige? She emotes differently. And did I mention that she writes her own songs?

Need U Bad is a poignant and remorseful plea for forgiveness to a lover. The sincerity of the apology is conveyed as much in the vivid lyrics (“I need you back as a heartbeat!”) as it is in the wrenching interpretation. The producing duo of Lamb of Missy Elliott is potent and keeps things interesting by switching from reggae on the verses to old school R&B on the choruses.

Dig up on Jazmine Sullivan and you’ll find out that she’s been on the grind for quite some time. Her new situation at J Records and this prospective single gets her that much closer to popular acclaim. And she’s worth embracing!
