Signifire - The 147th Best MC You've Never Heard Of
EP’s are dangerous. They can dazzle a listener and hook them to an artist. Or, they can disgust the listener and destroy any chance for the artist to gain them as a fan. While EP’s are shorter than real albums, to create a great EP is harder than creating a great album. An EP must be cohesive because the whole project is extremely short and any filler draws loads of attention. On an album, one or two filler tracks can be overlooked easily.

The first track on the EP (Re-Introducing) introduces the feel for the rest of the project and leads straight into the second song, She’s Beautiful. It is an up-beat track produced by DJ Form and finds Signifire reminiscing of a girl. The track’s funky feel and humorous lyrics are an example of what the rest of the EP has to offer. It’s All Lies is another stellar track, in which Signifire confesses of all his lies over some crispy drums and a funky guitar sample strung together by Manifest.

There is not a doubt that Signifire is a great emcee but what really makes The 147th Best Emcee You Never Heard Of EP unique is the production Signifire picks to rhyme over. The production is funky and fits to Signifire’s distinct personality shown over the series of tracks. The production is not nearly in the same vein of traditional production and features interesting vocal sample flips and sounds that are not necessarily native in hip hop.

What qualifies Signifire’s The 147th Emcee you Never Heard Of EP to be a great one is the fact that the whole thing meshes together to become one long song. All of the beats sound as if they were made to follow each other and Signifire’s clever and sometimes humorous rhymes fit right on top of the backdrop. The fact that the project is only 28 minutes makes the listen all the better. Not to say that Signifire couldn’t make a good album but because the material is condensed to a small run time the listener’s attention never wanders.
