It's becoming an unavoidable reality in Hip-Hop that if you tackle the animation outlet, you will have a successful cult following. Look at the support that cartoon enthusiasts like M.F. Doom received after his Cartoon Network affiliation, leading his 'Danger Doom' album to have impressive 25,000 first week sales. Next up to bat to check his hand at the cartoon/Hip Hop crossover potential is RZA with the Afro Samurai soundtrack.

The concept of the cartoon is quite ill, surprisingly on the FX network as opposed to the Cartoon Network, backed by the voice of Samuel L. "Motherfucking" Jackson as the main character. Black influence with Samurai customs tends to be right up RZA's alley as he handles the majority of the production load on the CD (including instrumental scores that are featured on the cartoon).
Highlights of the soundtrack include the Big Daddy Kane, Gza and Suga Bang collaboration on Cameo Afro with Kane dropping probably the best verse on the CD. Unfortunately the hook drains the song of reaching greater heights just as mediocre contributions plague a good portion of the CD.
Don't get me wrong, it's refreshing to hear Q-Tip on Just A Lil' Dude (Who Dat Ovah There) but I wish Free Murder's contributions were left off.
I guess for nostalgia sake it's great to hear ancient RZA Shaolin-flick-sampled production, but other than that, the music left much to be desired. In tV show context, many of the tracks designated as the score for the show will fit perfectly but as casual listening, I see myself getting bored with it fairly quickly.
Afro Samurai is yet another milestone in animation, showing the influence the black dollar and culture can have on popular culture, and that's something to support. Even if all of the material isn't the best you've heard from your favorite rappers, the artwork for the show that's included in the cd will make it well worth the purchase and it's nice to see Wu members other than Ghost and Meth still active.
