Wade Waters - Return Of The Kings
I’ve gotta admit that I didn’t even know this group existed until recently. Until I heard the heartfelt Haysoos freestyle, Ellis, dedicated to his deceased homeboy Dave Ellis and spat over a dope 9th Wonder who just keeps coming correct with the beats.

Listen to a few tracks...

On that freestyle Haysoos displayed distinct ability: he could sure rock the beat and his flow was tight. After hearing it, I was hyped to hear the mixtape that you’re now reading about. I’d already heard SoulStice before on his well-received North By Northwest: Solid Ground album, so I knew he’d bring the heat and, partnered with the previously unknown, DC-raised Haysoos, it’d make for a good listen.

I was definitely right about the mixtape being a good listen, and that’s evident just a couple minutes after taking off that annoying plastic seal and putting it in my cheap ass stereo. With Analogic on the boards, Haysoos & SoulStice drop Beautiful Sight, which reminded me of the classic Masta Ace track H.O.O.D. and that’s definitely a great song to be compared too. Haysoos shows off his raw skills once again touching on his love for hip-hop.

I do this for A.I.D.S. patients in the hospital room
I do it for the demonstrators screaming at the sit-in
The alienated kids at school who don’t fit in

Former Terror Squad member Cuban Link drops in on the hit single Rock Solid, which gives listeners a taste of what to expect from the full length Wade Waters LP due to drop this fall. Apparently the reason for recording this mixtape (and the future full length LP) was due to the massive success of this single. It wasn’t a bad choice to form the group either; SoulStice & Haysoos flow so effortlessly together that it’s uncanny. It’s solidified in their Conversation freestyle in which the two emcees trade lines discussing various political issues. It ain’t your typical rapper infused political discussions either: both SoulStice & Haysoos are well learned on today’s issues.

Overall Wade Waters manage to drop a very solid mixtape. And with both Haysoos’ and SoulStice’s attention forwarded onto the coming album, Dark Matter, I can’t see how anything will go wrong for these two crazy talented emcees.
