Home Reviews C.S.S.M.E. Che Grand - The Final Countdown

Another great soul has passed away. It's been reported that legendary musician was found dead at his home in Memphis today. The composer most known for the theme from Shaft and as the voice of Chef on Comedy Central's animated show South Park is no stranger to hip-hop: his work has been sampled many times over the years. My thoughts go to the Hayes' family in this time of grief.

Che Grand - The Final Countdown
When a relatively unknown rapper - in this case, Che Grand - turns in as memorable a performance as an establish vet - none other than Talib Kweli - on the same beat, you're undoubtedly compelled to listen. In this mixtape, The Final Countdown to his upcoming debut album, Conceptus Opus, Che Grand jacks Talib Kweli's Peace of Mind to give his own Piece of Mind. It's short but sweet and the chorus is masterful: "All we need's a piece of mind, a peaceful time, but wake up to the stress of a new day. No matter what they say, listen to Che, shit could be worse. Just remember that your smile still works."

Listen to a few tracks...

The beat jacking is common practice in mixtapes and Che Grand indulges in it as much as he name checks the Zimbabwe - whatever that is. The results are interesting to say the very least. Toe Tag Rap is undeniably infectious with it's thick bass and catchy chorus; I Really Mean It combines stunning braggadocio with comic relief (courtesy of a boisterous female foul mouth); On Your Box, Weren't In Love and the aforementioned Piece of Mind are sweet (but sadly) short pieces; and joints like Glorious (Remix) and Grandilla are more a matter of personal opinion - they're well executed nonetheless.

However, you'd be remiss to think Che's modus operandi is limited to beat jacking moves. The London-reared, NYC-based emcee not only shows a proficiency to shine in different vibes, he also proves he has a knack to surround himself with equally promising talents. He's brilliantly spelled by Cincinnati duo Ilwil on Steppin Over Water; he tag teams with Von Pea for the outstanding 92 Jam (Von Pea also assists on Grandilla); and he is joined by Garcia Vega and Valley for the solid Gunnin.

Yet the most promising aspect in this tape is the original production supplied by Suburb, who's behind the triumphant send-off The Finals, and Che's brother, Big Nan, who provides the beats for the pompous Wrap It Up and the riveting Valley Interlude. Let's hope for equally spectacular beats on Conceptus Opus.

The Final Countdown is the latest mixtape from Che Grand, who has already released four previously. It's admittedly his best out of the bunch, and his last before his debut. If it is any indication of where he's headed, we're in for a solid album.
