Home Reviews C.S.S.M.E. RZA Presents Wu-Tang Killa Bees: The Swarm, Volume 1

Backed by a dream team of producers, guest performers and masterminds, he made a spectacular entrance into the game with The Documentary. The cast changed and more control rested on his shoulders the second time around. The formula might have been the same pretty much, but he upped his game with Doctor's Advocate. In his third outing, The Game stays in his comfort zone and changes the cast of participants again. But who are we to complain. He's yet to deceive and tracks such as "Dope Boys," "Game's Pain" and "My Life" indicate that he's in the right direction. L.A.X. is due August 26th

The Swarm stretches the limit on how much Wu you can do. Perhaps a better name for the album would have been The Spawn since beat wizard Rza is now attending to the next generation of the Shaolin sound, including the Ruthless Bastards, Knights of the North Star and Shyheim. For the true Wu fans, The Swarm is a decent purchase especially with founding members like Inspecta Deck and Ghostface Killah making appearances. As well, it's hard to ignore the dynamicism of Rza's omnipresent soundclash. He's hip hop's Mahler/Monk/Miles all rolled into one, and while he only produces a third of The Swarm, his protogés (Mathematik, D.B. Allah) follow his manic progressive formula loyally. For the Wu Tang-weary though, The Swarm is all-too-well named - its blend of Shaolin slanguistics and stinging beats relentlessly assault ears already made tender from too much Wu.
