It's very rare in today's popular music to hear a song that you think may be one of the greatest you've ever heard. Gnarls Barkley -- that's Goodie Mob vet Cee Lo and Gorillaz producer Danger Mouse -- accomplished the feat with their smash hit Crazy. Now, about a year and three Grammy trophies later, the dynamic interracial duo is at it again with the appropriately titled The Odd Couple

One thing is for certain about these guys when you listen to the record: there's no pressure to make any record on this album that they're not feeling. And clearly the sophomore slump can't rear its ugly head here. The album starts off on a good note with Charity Case that has an infectious baseline reminiscent of flower power rock in the glory years of the Woodstock era. It's followed by the ever so poignant writing of Cee Lo Green on Who's Gonna Save My Soul: the passionate delivery is more reflective of a Baptist jubilee choir rather than a pop record.
When I say these guys are pop, it's not in traditional sense of cheesy pop music you hear on your local dial. It's pop because such creative writing and composition is simply undeniable. Run, the album's lead single seems like an Austin Powers flashback with uptempo organs and congas to accompany Cee Lo as he pleads in the song's chorus, "Run away! Run away! Run children! Run for your life!" Run from what exactly? I don't know, but the song is so infectious your cross-trainers need be near by.
Despite the brilliance of Cee Lo's writing and Danger Mouse's backdrops, there are some moments during the album where you would like to hear Cee Lo re-explore his emceeing roots, which are up to par with his harmonizing. Surprisingly and sadly, the album is completely empty of such.
Is there a song as gargantuan as Crazy or even Smiley Faces? No. But there is some dope music that will ensure more Grammy's in the future of these Atlanta natives. The Odd Couple is also definite proof that Gnarls Barkley isn't just a one hit wonder. There's no doubt that the duo will keep up with unapologetic, creative music for the masses.
