I’ll be filing my own copy of 9th Wonder’s Dream Merchant 2 among the rest of my soul section. Although technically a rap album, 9th’s second offering in The Dream Merchant series is chock-full of passionate, yet gritty production. Those that argue that 9th is boring because he always sounds the same will probably have the same argument after listening to this album. However, if you like what 9th Wonder has done in the past, you’re going to like this. Yes, he comes again with his distinct sound, full of soul loops and soft drums, but just like in his previous compositions, it works here once again. This time, though, his years of practical experience seem to come together with his formal education in music, and his sounds have a more polished and mature feel.

No Time to Chill will make Little Brother fans (me included) a bit sad and reminiscent at the same time as the familiar sounds of Phonte and Big Pooh over 9th Wonder’s music continue to intertwine perfectly. Saigon and Joe Scudda make a surprising good pair on Saved. The top highlight, however, is the contribution from the Crooklyn Dodger crew, which includes Mos Def, Jean Grae and Memphis Bleek on Brooklyn on My Mind.
The only downside is the length of the album. As much as 9th delivers his best on the production, the songs do have similar tendencies and it becomes hard to distinguish the individual tracks. The best songs are the ones with a better personality and stronger presence on the mic to counter the softness of 9th’s sounds, such as the tracks that feature Mos Def, Jean Grae, Chaundon (who sounds great over the tribute to Sunday), Phonte, Big Pooh, Jozeemo, and Saigon.
Overall, the album is another special gem from the Justus League. It’s not every day that you can describe a hip-hop album as “beautiful.” The combination of great production and decent lyrical contributions equals an album worthy of purchase.
