Dan Johns may be a victim of the long album problem. When listening to any single track of his In The Face of Danger, it is evident that Dan Johns is quite an emcee. His ability to flow over a beat correctly immediately makes itself clear to the listener.
Throughout the whole album, Johns makes it obvious he can make bangers as well as get into your head. On, Give Em What They Want, Dan Johns has no problem rocking over an upbeat track with a catchy call and respond hook and potent verses. To Whom... is another gem where Dan Johns flaunts his skills over an Organ-based track. Myself is an eerie track in which Johns addresses those doubt him.
While he is quite the emcee, he has one variable working against him. His album is just too long. There is no doubt that the material is strong but there is too much. It is not easy to listen to In The Face Of Danger all the way through. After taking a few listens, it is obvious Dan Johns could've made a much shorter album. If the album was cut down by eight or nine tracks, it would have made the album a much more smooth listen and possibly catapulted the album from good to phenomenal.
Don't be surprised if the name Dan Johns will be well known in the future. His style is undeniable and his ability to shift his flow up to fit the beat will not go un-noticed by labels. With all the great material on this album, Dan Johns can obviously craft a great track but the next step is a great album...that's just a little shorter.
