Devin’s charm and cleverness makes it hard (at times) to get mad at him for his content. But, I was quickly hesitant after listening to the first track, She Want That Money, where Devin’s ho and bitch references turned me off. I Hope I Don’t Get Sick-A-This is straight disgusting, but won’t be new to fans of Devin’s previous music.
But, then on two guest-appearance tracks, What A Job,” and Lil’ Girl Gone, Devin puts together some classic gems. The smooth combination of drums and guitar sounds on What A Job, combined with the lyrics of Devin, Snoop Doggy Dogg, and Andre 3000, who express their appreciation for their job, come together to make a great track. Lil’ Wayne and Bun B contribute forcefully on the piano-concentrated, Lil’ Girl Gone, a tale of an intelligent young woman who gets on the wrong track.
Devin’s strength is his humor. On Almighty Dollar, he tells of his money struggles and the depreciating value of a dollar, to where the homeless won’t accept any donations less than $3. Cutha’ Up, though it sounds downright disturbing at first, truly is a clever and funny song about Devin waiting for his marijuana plant to develop. On the horn-sprinkled She Useta Be, Devin tells of his being shut down from high-school crush, only to run into her again years and 150 pounds later. Broccoli & Cheese is just funny and ridiculous, with Devin suggesting that his genitalia are so “clean” that you could boil it with collard greens.
Overall, if you’re a fan of Devin’s previous music or if you’re looking for something to relax to (and you’re not sexist-sensitive), you’re going to be pleased with Waitin' to Inhale. If you expect more from your music, such as conscious material, you may want to look elsewhere.
