Consequence - Don't Quit Your Day Job
The purpose of effective artistry is to be able to connect with the public. So, being a starving artist myself, the Consequence album of Don't Quit Your Day Job kind of hit close to home on many instances. The album begins with Job Song: Bob James' Nautilus is sampled and used to conduct the story of having to find a 9 to 5 since the music isn't popping as fast as it needs to be.

Listen to a few tracks...

The trials and tribulations of having a regular job while living with your mother is something that I can definitely overstand and 'Quence explains his turmoil with such cleverness and honesty. Uncle Rahiem is about his uncle fresh out of prison and having to relocate with 'Quence (or Dexter on the album) and his mother. The result is a song with great storytelling and memorable lines like, "If I find another shirt missing out of my wardrobe/ I'm gonna turn this little happy home into a warzone."

I have to admit being pleasantly surprised by this solid effort from Consequence. Being one of the few people from the Native Tongues' era that never quite got his proper due, some may have believed that he wouldn't be able to handle a solo project, but he did. Kanye West handles executive producer duties and contributes to some of the beats and verses. In so doing, he helps mold this album into a creative effort that maintained my interest. Songs like Grammy Family with Kanye and John Legend, and The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, show great chemistry between the G.O.O.D music co-workers.

Overall the production was dope; there were barely any moments where my head wasn't nodding. The words Consequence added to that backdrop ultimately left me very satisfied with the album. We may never see an A Tribe Called Quest reunion or have the Tongues come together like we've all dreamt. But we do have people like 'Quence keeping that vibe alive. The vibe of an artist that still finds way to express himselg creatively and passionately. All of this despite the people that may suggest, "Don't quit your day job."
