"To die unheard I won't grant it/six feet under this planet unknown I can't stand it..." - M.F. Grimm Percy Carey aka MF Grimm has been through a lot in his career. He was once part of the famous Rocksteady Crew and he's shared microphones with legends such as Kool G. Rap and Akinyele. In 1993 he came in second for a freestyle battle event for "World Supremacy" which had legendary battle emcees such as (Mad) Skillz and Supernatural. He's also released a string of classic underground singles. So far his career sounds like something most emcees of the early 90s would dream of. Unfortunately, as time went on in the 90s bad luck began to augment. He was shot 10 times which left him paralyzed from the waist down (at one time this incident left him blind and unable to speak) and he eventually went to jail for a number of years. The bad luck began to run out and after being released from jail, Grimm had started a successful record company (Day By Day Entertainment) and had already released two albums (Downfall of Ibylis: A Ghetto Opera and GM Grimm is Superstar Jet Jaguar). Both of these albums were well received by his fans, but there was a portion missing that most of his fans hadn't had the chance to hear. Besides his singles, what else has he recorded during the mid-90s? In 2005 the question is finally answered with Scars and Memories. | Record Author(s): MF Grimm | | Record Title: Scars and Memories | | Record Producer(s): Dr. Butcher, Gonzo, Mas, MF Doom, Ninja B, Rob Swift, Sean C. and Knobody | | Executive Producer(s): n/a | | Release Date: April 26, 2005 |
Scars and Memories is a collection of songs that span from 1990-2005. Most of them are from stolen reels and have featured guests that are no longer alive. These songs show MF Grimm at his finest. You can hear the hunger in his voice on So Whatcha Want as he warns emcees about his skills on the microphone. (One of the verses for this track was supposed to be on Main Source's Live at the BBQ. ) Another rare gem on this album features lost M.I.C member (Monsta Island Czars, for those who don't know) Yves (RIP) on In The End where both emcees trade verses over an uptempo boom-bap beat that takes you back to the 90s. The tag teaming on this song is ridiculous! Besides the unreleased songs on the album, MF Grimm gives the fans his singles that brought him respect in the mid-90s underground scene. Songs like Bloody Love Letter (a touching tale where the emcee has recently been shot and he writes his significant other a love poem before he dies); Take Em to War (the original version featuring production by MF Doom); and Do It For The Kids (a braggadocio song not for children...he could've used the version without the annoying little kid on the hook though). But an album released by MF Grimm that features unreleased songs and singles would be incomplete without the title track Scars and Memories. In this song he describes his situation from getting shot to losing his friend. Instead of a regular "I miss my homie" song, his dead friend talks to him from beyond the grave and they both have a conversation about the situation they are both in. This album is like a documentary on the life of M.F. Grimm. If you are a fan of any of his albums or singles, be prepared to be blown away! This is a must for any fan of Mr. Percy Carey. | Grandmaster | | | | Take Em To War | | | | Manhattan | | | | King of New York | | | | Get Down | w/ DJ Ekim | | | Hiphop | | | | So Watcha Want? | | | | Getting Shot | | | | Bloody Love Letter | | | | Comrade | | | | Scars and Memories | | | | Percy Carey | | | | Crumb Snatchers | | | | In The End | w/ Yves St. Larock | | | AIDS | w/ Kool G Rap, Akinyele, CJ Moore & Big Chuck | | | MF Grimm | | | | The Original | | | | Wack Emcees | w/ Nomad, Yves St. Larock & Wayne-O of the E-Brothers | | | Do It For The Kids | | | | Emotions | w/ B-One | | | Dedicated | w/ Squeeze | |
