Home Music Features The Mixtape DJ Eleven - Houston Rocks It [New York, USA]

Backed by a dream team of producers, guest performers and masterminds, he made a spectacular entrance into the game with The Documentary. The cast changed and more control rested on his shoulders the second time around. The formula might have been the same pretty much, but he upped his game with Doctor's Advocate. In his third outing, The Game stays in his comfort zone and changes the cast of participants again. But who are we to complain. He's yet to deceive and tracks such as "Dope Boys," "Game's Pain" and "My Life" indicate that he's in the right direction. L.A.X. is due August 26th

Monday, 12 December 2005 06:29

As we look back at year 2005 in hip-hop, we might chose to remember it as a much more eventful year than the four ones before. We'll be quick to remark that the South reigned supreme once again (and, despite the ravages inflicted by Mother Nature, stood with its chin up, more than ever determined to move on.) We've been showered with good albums in the mainstream and the underground, and diversity seems to be creeping in...What a delight! But let's not forget or ignore the fact that 2005 marks the emergence of Houston as a powerhouse in hip-hop. Slim Thug, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Lil Flip, Chamillionaire, Bun B (he's from Port Arthur, but still). Those names should sound familliar to hip-hop fans all around. It's fitting that the last mixtape of the year paid tribute to Houston hip-hop. DJ Eleven, a New York DJ, recognizes that Houston has been big this year, so should you.

A little bit about myself...
I'm from Oakland, California originally but have lived in Brooklyn, New York for over 6 years. I rep The Rub & (((Local1200))).
I started making mixtapes to give to club promoters/owners to try & get gigs when I first moved to NYC. Once I was working regularly in the club scene in NYC, I started making mixtapes as an outlet for all the music I was listening to that I couldn't play in a club.
I don't really stick to a particular style. I've made mixtapes which range from a 'Best of Rick James' to a whole series of club friendly hip-hop, reggae and R&B tapes. And, when I DJ out, I play a lot of different styles in different ways depending on the crowd and the style of music.

My influences & favorites...   More...
Musically, I'm influenced by music which comes from the soul, from M.O.P. to Barry White. My favorites are constantly changing as my listening patterns change.

When I'm making a mixtape...
More than anything, I try to have a certain mood - musically - for the length of mixtape while showcasing music that people may have forgotten or that never got enough shine.

What I'm working on...
I'm working on a 'Best of M.O.P.' mixtape, a tour of Europe, and a bunch of projects with my partners in The Rub.
Make sure that you check my site, www.djeleven.com, for mixtapes, up-coming parties, and other odds and ends.
My take on the current hip-hop state...
I'm as excited about it as I was 10-15 years ago. While it's harder to find a good album these days, there's so much great music coming out every week/month that with a little leg work you can find great hip-hop from all over the US and the world.
