It's happened to you before. You'd listen to a song for the first time and you'd swear you heard it before. In hip-hop (and by extent urban) music, production is often sample-driven. So, it's not surprizing to find two or more song that sample from the same source. The Battle of Beats showcases those kinda occurences. More specifically, it showcases songs that share common elements: samples, lyrics, etc. You are more than welcome to voice your opinion by adding a comment and/or making use of the complementary poll.

| As bizarre a hit as Funky Worm was for the Ohio Players in the early 1970's, there's no denying its funkiness. And it should come as no surprise that the track has been sampled numerous times. Here we highlight a few notables. Dr. Dre used the sample twice: first with Dopeman, on N.W.A.'s raucous debut, and then with the thunderous posse cut Serial Killa that you'd find on Snoop's Doggystyle... |

"A principal architect of the Stax-Volt sound, singer/composer William Bell remains best known for his classic You Don't Miss Your Water, one of the quintessential soul records to emerge from the Memphis scene." - Jason Ankeny, allmusic.com
Among several of his hits was I Forgot To Be Your Lover in the late 1960s, his biggest hit on the Stax label. The ballad has been sampled quite often thru the years - and it wasn't just in the hip-hop world - giving all the resulting songs a lovely soulful touch. (OK, maybe not on the Brand Nubian joint.) The poll is on the right. Enjoy and don't forget to let us know which one you prefer!

Maybe it was just the "thing" to indulge in; maybe it was a testament to Jay-Z's greatness - it was certainly a big boost to his ego. When Roc-A-Fella released The Black Album's a cappellas, several producers proceeded to match Jay-Z's vocals with their own compositions. The resulting mash-up albums brought their share of controversies in 2004, a collaborative album between Mr. Carter and Linkin Park, and even prompted a shrine-like site, The Jay-Z Construction Set. This is the third in five Battle of Beats that showcases the mash-ups. The song is Dirt Off Your Shoulder. The poll is on your right. |
